Virgin Garden and their suppliers are building a better life for Plantation Workers and their families.
Our supplier is part of the IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movement). This means that a level of standards for the basic welfare requirements of the workers in the field of housing, food, education, transport, health facilities and general conditions of life in the estate must be met.
A comprehensive action plan has been implemented for the steady development of physical health care, mental well being, social environment preservation, economic progress and the spiritual needs of the Bio Tea Community.
Achievements so far:
- 150 Houses built
- 100 Units built
- Childcare Centre
- Medical Centre
- Community Centre
- Electricity supply to 350 Families
- 3 Playgrounds
- 10km Road Development
Workers are now provided with electricity and a water supply. (350 families have been supplied with water service and 200 units with electricity.) All units are now occupied, with 150 new units under construction, soon the entire workforce will be provided with cottages! Sanitary conditions were in deplorable condition, but with the construction of 350 toilets the hygienic conditions have improved immensely.
The workers have reacted very favourably to this form of support and have beautified their cottages with flower gardens. They are self-sufficient in their requirements of vegetables, and the management is always prepared to extend whatever assistance is required for this type of undertaking.
